An old piece for Intimates #1, released in Nov 2004. This particular one was the promo cover by Jim and Sandra for the new series. However, for the first few issues of this book, Jim wanted to try something different on the covers with a very loose penciled style and I complimented it with my own loose colors with a harder edged brush, which I wasn't used to doing at the time. Special thanks to Jim for letting me experiment with that and allowing me to push my boundaries back then.
This book was really different in its approach to storytelling. Every issue was packed full of interesting things to read, thanks to informative lil blurbs by Joe Casey that really added to the traditional narrative on every page, featuring art by the talented Giuseppe Camuncoli.
The Intimates was about the lives of a couple of students in a "superhero school" in the Wildstorm Universe called the Seminary. Imagine your typical teenage high school drama but with super powers, and you pretty much get the picture. We used to joke in the studio about how the Disney movie "Sky High" totally ripped off our book, heh.
One particular issue that really struck me was Issue 5 about a student named Dead Kid Fred. This was a really sad story about loneliness and just being different. This issue told a very strong message through this unique superhero backdrop. The last few pages are simply shocking. Someday I hope we get to reprint this book in TPB form.
